ChatGPT's own ways to keep a recipe
All free. None of them were built for recipes, but each one helps a little.
Leave it in your chat history. The chat stays in the sidebar, and you can search your chats. It works until you have a few hundred of them and the recipe was in the middle of a chat about something else.
A "Recipes" project. Projects work on the free plan too. Select New project in the sidebar and name it, then drag a chat onto it or open the chat's menu and choose Move to project. Now your recipe chats live in one folder. You still scroll through each conversation to find the ingredients.
A shared link. The share button at the top right of a chat makes a link anyone can open, which is the easiest way to send a recipe to someone else. The link shows the chat as it was when you shared it, and it stops working if you delete the link or the chat.
Copy it into Notes. Copy the reply and paste it into a notes app. Now the recipe is text you own, but it's one note among many, and it won't turn into a shopping list.
| Method | Easy to find later | Keeps the recipe if the chat is deleted | Turns into a shopping list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat history | Only by searching your chats | No | No |
| A Recipes project | Yes, in one folder | No | No |
| Shared link | Only if you saved the link | No | No |
| Notes app | Somewhat | Yes | No |
| Prepful | Yes, next to the recipes you saved from TikTok, Instagram, and websites | Yes | Yes, one list for the whole week |
Save a ChatGPT recipe in Prepful
Works the same for Claude, Gemini, or Copilot. About twenty seconds.
In ChatGPT, copy the reply with the recipe in it.
Open Prepful and go to Recipes > Add > Paste a Recipe.
Paste it. The chatty parts around the recipe are fine to leave in.
Prepful sorts it into a title, an ingredient list, and numbered steps. Check it and save.
Have a shared link instead? Paste it into Recipes > Add > Import a Recipe and Prepful will try to read the recipe from it. If it can't, open the link, copy the text, and use Paste a Recipe.
One recipe per paste
If ChatGPT gave you a whole week of dinners in one reply, paste each recipe on its own so each one gets its own card. And if it only gave you a meal idea ("sheet-pan gnocchi with sausage"), ask it to write out the full recipe with amounts first, so there's an ingredient list to save.
Check the amounts before you cook
Chatbot recipes usually read well, but the numbers aren't tested in a kitchen the way a recipe from a food blog or cookbook is. Before you shop, look over the amounts, the oven temperature, and the cooking time, and ask ChatGPT to fix anything that looks off before you save it. After you cook it, rate it in Prepful and add a note about what you'd change next time.
Then put it on your week
A recipe in a chat is a nice idea. A recipe on Tuesday is dinner. Add a few saved recipes to days this week and their ingredients go onto one shopping list, with repeats combined. See how to meal plan with the recipes you've saved and how to make a grocery list from recipes.
If it doesn't work
Prepful needs at least a few lines to work with, so paste the whole recipe, not just the title. A shared link won't import if it was deleted or needs a sign-in to view, so copy and paste the text instead. Prepful is on iPhone, Android, and the web, and your recipes are the same everywhere you sign in. Saving recipes from elsewhere too? See the guides for TikTok, Instagram, a photo, and any website.
